Education Minister Paul Calandra has expressed his intention to intervene if an Ontario school board fails to reinstate prom plans for three high schools that recently canceled the events. The decision to cancel the traditional proms at three schools in the Durham District School Board was attributed to concerns raised by the principals regarding increasing liabilities and associated risks.
Students reacted with disappointment and frustration upon learning that the cherished celebration was called off, depriving them of the opportunity to partake in a common rite of passage. Calandra emphasized the significance of prom as a milestone to commemorate achievements, emphasizing the need for such events to be conducted safely.
Addressing the legislature after a question period, Calandra conveyed a stern message to the school board and others contemplating similar actions, urging them to reconsider any plans to cancel proms. He stressed the importance of prioritizing the well-being of students and educators in decision-making processes, aligning with his broader agenda to reform board governance with a specific emphasis on trustees’ responsibilities.
“It’s about letting students enjoy their youth,” Calandra stated passionately, emphasizing the imperative for school boards to prioritize student welfare. He underscored his willingness to utilize enhanced legislative powers, including the ability to place school boards under supervision more effectively, to ensure that student interests are upheld.
The Durham District School Board has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the prom cancellations. The decision to forgo proms at Brooklin, Brock, and Uxbridge high schools was communicated to parents by the respective principals, citing escalating liabilities and risks as the rationale behind the move.
The principals assured parents that while proms may be off the table, efforts would be directed towards organizing alternative year-end activities that foster inclusivity and meaningful student interactions, emphasizing safety, respect, and a sense of community.
