“Elliot Page’s Donation Faces Turbulent Path to Clean Water”

Elliot Page’s $25,000 donation for a community well in Shelburne, N.S. has turned into a long and challenging journey. The project, aimed at providing clean water to a drought-prone area, has faced seven years of disputes, delays, and changes in plans involving various stakeholders.

Page, in an interview, expressed his frustration over the prolonged delays and obstacles hindering the well project. The donation, initially meant for drilling a well in the Black community, saw a shift to an existing well on the NSCC campus outside town limits, with a significant portion of the funds spent on testing.

Despite the province’s approval of $170,000 for the project, disagreements persist, with ongoing discussions on funding and operational aspects. The situation has led to a complex process involving the province, municipalities, and community groups like SEED.

In light of the project’s challenges, activists emphasize the urgent need for clean water, especially in the face of climate change and environmental concerns. Page remains committed to the cause, finding inspiration from key figures like Louise Delisle and Ingrid Waldron, featured in his documentary.

The community’s struggle for access to clean water reflects broader issues of environmental racism and industrial impacts on marginalized communities. The ongoing efforts to resolve the well project highlight the importance of cooperation and addressing systemic barriers to ensure the community’s well-being.
