“ER Doctor Settles Legal Dispute for Patient Care”

Emergency room doctor Kaitlin Stockton has come to an agreement with the Fraser Health Authority to settle a legal dispute that alleged her dismissal was unjust after she raised concerns about conditions at two hospitals where she practiced.

Stockton expressed her commitment to advocating for improved patient care by encouraging all medical professionals to feel empowered to address systemic issues without fear of repercussions. She remains optimistic about the potential for positive change.

While the specifics of the settlement remain undisclosed, Stockton expressed relief that the process has concluded. In June, she initiated legal action against Fraser Health in the B.C. Supreme Court, seeking compensation for wrongful termination and damages related to what she described as an oppressive work environment.

According to Stockton’s lawsuit, she and her colleagues faced challenging conditions, including workplace violence and a culture of silence that discouraged speaking out. The tipping point came on November 18, 2024, when Stockton and her peers warned patients about the strained conditions at Eagle Ridge Hospital.

Allegations of Stockton’s dismissal through constructive dismissal were raised, claiming that she was essentially forced to resign due to the actions of her employer. Subsequently, Stockton transitioned to a role at Vancouver Coastal Health, where she has received significant support from fellow healthcare professionals.

Her efforts have garnered attention from policymakers, including Health Minister Josie Osborne, with whom Stockton has engaged to explore evidence-based solutions and advocate for better management practices within the healthcare system.

Fraser Health confirmed the settlement without divulging further details. Stockton’s social media posts feature a statement from Fraser Health reaffirming their commitment to nurturing a culture that values staff and medical professionals who raise safety concerns or advocate for system enhancements.
