Félix Auger-Aliassime has secured a spot in the semifinals of the Paris Masters tennis tournament, boosting his chances of qualifying for the prestigious ATP Finals. His impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory over wildcard entrant Valentin Vacherot of Monaco propels him to a face-off against 13th-seeded Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan in the next round.
This critical win not only propels Auger-Aliassime to within 90 points of Lorenzo Musetti in the race for the final spot at the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy but also signifies a shift from his previous tough matches characterized by tight sets and tiebreaks. Vacherot, on the other hand, entered the quarterfinals on a remarkable 10-match winning streak at the ATP 1000 level, having clinched the last Masters-level event in Shanghai earlier.
Auger-Aliassime, seeded ninth in Paris, showcased a stellar performance against Vacherot, demonstrating a high level of play by winning 89% of first-serve points and saving both break points he faced. Reflecting on the match, Auger-Aliassime acknowledged the challenge posed by Vacherot’s confidence but emphasized his own focus and intensity from the outset, which enabled him to deliver strong tennis throughout the encounter.
The Canadian talent managed to limit Vacherot to a mere 6-of-39 return points won while securing a 49% success rate on his own returns and breaking his opponent four times. Auger-Aliassime, eyeing his ninth career title and first at the Masters level, now sets his sights on a showdown with Bublik, whom he holds a 3-2 head-to-head record against.
In the women’s segment, Canadians Victoria Mboko and Leylah Fernandez are set to clash in the semifinals of the Hong Kong Open following their triumphs in the quarterfinals. Fernandez, seeded second, overcame Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-4, while Mboko, seeded third, secured a 6-1, 3-1 walkover victory against Russian Anna Kalinskaya. The winner of their upcoming encounter will advance to face either Spain’s Cristina Bucsa or Australia’s Maya Joint, ranked 68th and 32nd worldwide, with Mboko and Fernandez holding the 21st and 22nd rankings, respectively.
