In 2005, J.D. Fortune, a resident of Nova Scotia, found himself temporarily living in his car in Toronto with his pug, Presley. One day, while listening to the radio, the 31-year-old caught wind of auditions for a CBS reality TV series called “Rock Star.” The show aimed to select a new lead vocalist for the renowned Australian band INXS, which had been searching for a permanent singer since the passing of Michael Hutchence in 1997.
Fortune, inspired by the opportunity, made a bold declaration to his canine companion, Presley, named after the legendary musician Elvis Presley. He expressed his determination to win the competition, feeling a sudden surge of confidence like a striking bolt of lightning. His dream came to fruition on the September 20, 2005, episode of the show, where he emerged victorious.
Growing up in Pictou County, N.S., Fortune, a self-proclaimed country boy, had always aspired to perform on stage and pursue a musical career. His victory on “Rock Star” marked the realization of a lifelong ambition. Before his breakthrough on the reality show, Fortune had engaged in various jobs, including driving a tractor-trailer and a brief stint in the Canadian army. Despite being labeled as an Elvis impersonator in CBS’s bio, Fortune clarified that his involvement with Elvis tunes was part of his past experiences with touring companies.
Following his triumph on the show, Fortune went on to record an album titled “Switch” with INXS and embarked on a demanding global tour. Despite the intense pressure of the reality TV experience, Fortune found fulfillment in performing songs like “Pretty Vegas,” a track he had contributed to writing. Post-INXS, Fortune returned to Nova Scotia to reconnect with his roots and loved ones.
Currently, Fortune is focusing on new music projects, including an upcoming album and a book scheduled for release next year. He leads a quiet life in Pictou County, dedicating his mornings to the gym and his days to music. His tour schedule includes upcoming shows in Australia, with plans for performances in Canada and the U.S. to be announced soon.
The “Rock Star: INXS” competition not only provided a platform to discover a new frontman for INXS but also served as a promotional opportunity for the band to engage both existing and new fans. INXS, known for hits like “Original Sin” and “Need You Tonight,” faced challenges following Hutchence’s demise and saw the reality show as a chance to revitalize their music.
Fortune’s success story on “Rock Star” exemplifies his journey from living in his car to becoming the lead singer of INXS, showcasing his resilience and dedication to pursuing his musical dreams.
