Hockey Legend Eddie Giacomin Dies at 86

Eddie Giacomin, a revered goalie and iconic figure of the New York Rangers franchise during the 1960s and 1970s, has passed away at the age of 86. The Rangers confirmed his death due to natural causes as reported by his family. The NHL Alumni Association spokesperson also disclosed that Giacomin passed away at his residence on Sunday evening.

Known for the resounding chants of ‘Ed-die! Ed-die!’ from the enthusiastic crowds at Madison Square Garden, Giacomin’s legacy was acknowledged by the NHL in a statement expressing condolences to his family, friends, and the fans who were captivated by his remarkable career. Hailing from Sudbury, Ontario, Giacomin, a six-time All-Star, clinched the prestigious Vezina Trophy for the league’s top goaltender in the 1970-71 season.

Having served the Rangers from 1965 to 1976, Giacomin guided the team to the Stanley Cup Final in 1972. His enduring impact was immortalized when his jersey number, No. 1, was retired in the rafters of Madison Square Garden in 1989. The Rangers reflected on Giacomin’s unparalleled contribution, stating that he epitomized the essence of playing for the team, and his name is synonymous with the organization’s rich history.

Following his tenure with the Rangers, Giacomin concluded his career with the Detroit Red Wings, amassing 290 victories and a .902 save percentage before retiring in 1978. His illustrious career was honored with an induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
