“India’s Bid for 2036 Olympics Gains Momentum”

At a morning training session at the top-notch shooting range in Pune, Maharashtra, the atmosphere was vibrant with discussions about India’s ambition to host the Summer Games in 2036.

Shahu Mane, a former World Cup champion in the 10-meter air pistol mixed event, expressed his enthusiasm, emphasizing the Olympics as a massive platform with unparalleled significance. Mane, also a former Youth Olympic Games silver medalist, highlighted the government’s efforts to bolster the country’s sports infrastructure, foreseeing positive impacts on both the nation and the sporting community.

India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics took a significant step when a delegation visited the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters in Lausanne to pitch Ahmedabad as the potential host city. The final decision is expected by late 2027, following two years of groundwork leading up to the official presentation.

Despite challenges such as governance issues within the Indian Olympic Association and a history of low medal counts at previous Games, the optimism among athletes training at the Gun for Glory Shooting Academy in Pune is high. They believe that India’s proficiency in shooting sports positions the country well to secure the prestigious event.

Construction activities in Ahmedabad further underline India’s commitment to bolstering its sports infrastructure. With plans for ten major stadiums and ongoing efforts to showcase readiness and capability to the IOC, India aims to outshine rival bids from countries like Qatar, Turkey, and Chile.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to host the 2036 Olympics in India, articulated during the 2024 Independence Day celebrations, reflects the government’s determination to enhance the nation’s global standing through sport. Initiatives like “Khelo India” demonstrate a concerted focus on nurturing young talent and elevating India’s position in the medal rankings by 2036.

While concerns over doping and governance remain, the aspiration to host the Olympics symbolizes a collective dream for 1.4 billion Indians. The journey towards this goal is underpinned by a national fervor for sports and a vision to inspire pride and development through hosting the world’s most prominent sporting event.

In the face of skepticism and challenges highlighted by experts, the allure of hosting the Olympics in India resonates strongly among athletes like Shreya Agrawal, who envisions the transformative impact such an event could have on the sports landscape and the aspirations of young athletes across the country.
