“IndyCar Series Moves to Markham for 2026 Season”

The annual NTT IndyCar Series weekend races in Toronto are relocating to downtown Markham starting in 2026, as confirmed exclusively by Green Savoree Racing Promotions to CBC Toronto. The five-year agreement between the organizers and the city sets the event dates for August 14 to August 16, 2026.

Jeff Atkinson, president of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Markham, expressed enthusiasm for the move, highlighting the city’s excitement to host the event. The decision to shift the race from Toronto came after considering factors such as Toronto’s hosting duties for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and ongoing changes at Exhibition Place.

The Toronto race, a fixture in the IndyCar Series for nearly four decades, had been held at Exhibition Place since 1986. Due to circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic, the race was canceled in 2008, 2020, and 2021.

The move to Markham aims to establish a long-term foundation for the event, offering better accessibility for the majority of attendees. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti anticipates the race becoming the city’s largest sporting event, enhancing its global reputation.

The 3.52-kilometer circuit in Markham, set to feature 12 turns and a split pit road, will provide improved fan experiences compared to the previous Toronto layout. The track’s location partially on the Unionville GO property and its proximity to York University’s Markham Campus offer convenient transportation options for fans.

Sponsored by the Ontario Honda Dealers Association, the race’s relocation to Markham, home to Honda Canada’s headquarters, promises economic benefits for the community. Organizers plan to address potential concerns from residents regarding traffic and noise disruptions, ensuring collaboration with the city on a comprehensive traffic management plan.

Drawing inspiration from a successful race in St. Petersburg, Florida, organizers are modeling aspects of the Markham event after the Florida race to replicate its achievements. Despite some resident reservations, the city and organizers are committed to working closely with the community to address any challenges.

Additional event details, including support series, entertainment, and amenities, will be revealed in the upcoming months.
