Israel’s president has urged an immediate halt to the escalating incidents of settler violence after a disturbing attack by Jewish settlers on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Isaac Herzog’s strong condemnation stands out as a rare and significant voice among top Israeli officials who have mostly stayed quiet on the issue. While Herzog’s role is largely symbolic, it serves as a moral guide and uniting force for the nation.
Describing the violence as crossing a critical threshold, Herzog emphasized the need for all state authorities to take decisive action to eradicate such behavior. The recent attack involved masked Israeli settlers targeting the Palestinian villages of Beit Lid and Deir Sharaf, resulting in property damage and clashes with Israeli soldiers.
Echoing Herzog’s sentiments, the Israeli army’s chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, reiterated the military’s zero-tolerance policy towards criminal acts that disrupt public order. He stressed the importance of stopping violent incidents by settlers, stating that such actions are contrary to Israeli principles and distract from security operations.
The head of the military’s Central Command, Maj.-Gen. Avi Bluth, highlighted the resources needed to address the actions of a small extremist group, resources that could otherwise be utilized for enhancing security measures and counterterrorism efforts. Following the attack, police arrested four Israelis while four Palestinians sustained injuries during the clashes.
The surge in settler violence, particularly targeting Palestinians during the olive harvest season, has been a growing concern. Recent data from the United Nations humanitarian office shows a significant increase in Israeli settler attacks in the West Bank, with more than 260 incidents recorded in October alone.
Critics accuse the Israeli government of failing to rein in settler violence, with key figures in the government endorsing settlement expansion. Palestinians affected by the attacks lament the loss of property and sense of security, calling for international sanctions against groups supporting such activities.
Global condemnation of settlements as illegal under international law has been reiterated by Canada and other countries. Canada has imposed sanctions on individuals linked to extremist settler violence, emphasizing its opposition to annexation of Palestinian territories.
Residents affected by the violence express fear and frustration, emphasizing their right to live in safety without constant threat. The recent attack on a dairy factory was described as a coordinated and planned assault, underscoring the organized nature of the violence perpetrated by settlers.
