Josh Liendo made a remarkable appearance at the Pan Am Sports Centre, reminiscing about his significant achievements at his hometown pool. The 23-year-old, known for setting records in Ontario and representing Canada at the Olympics, added another feather to his cap by breaking the short course world record in the men’s 100 butterfly. Liendo’s stellar performance, with a winning time of 47.68 seconds, surpassed the previous record set by Switzerland’s Noe Ponti. The elated swimmer expressed his disbelief at achieving this feat during the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup.
Liendo, who also clinched a gold medal in the men’s 50 freestyle later that evening, was overwhelmed by the support from the crowd, including his family and former chiropractor. His coach, Byron MacDonald, praised Liendo’s exceptional talent and stated that breaking the world record was inevitable for the skilled athlete. Liendo’s flawless technique and strong start in the race demonstrated his prowess in the pool.
In another event, Liendo set a World Cup record in the men’s 50 freestyle, further solidifying his dominance in the competition. His rival, Ilya Kharun of Montreal, who previously outperformed Liendo in the 100 fly, secured a bronze medal in the 50 freestyle event. Liendo’s achievements, including being the first Black Canadian swimmer to win an Olympic medal, have placed him among the elite swimmers in the country.
The competition continues, featuring exceptional performances from various international swimmers and notable records being broken. While some athletes have faced challenges, like Canadian star Summer McIntosh missing the series due to illness, others have excelled and claimed victory. The event promises thrilling races and remarkable displays of athleticism as top swimmers strive for excellence in the pool.
