Lucasfilm’s longtime leader Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down after more than 13 years, handing over the reins to Dave Filoni at the renowned Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas. The Walt Disney Co. revealed the leadership shift, appointing Filoni as president and chief creative officer to guide Star Wars into its next era alongside Lynwen Brennan, who will co-lead as president and general manager of Lucasfilm’s businesses.
Reflecting on her tenure, Kennedy expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with the exceptional talent at Lucasfilm, a journey that began when she was chosen by George Lucas himself to lead the company. Under Kennedy’s guidance, the Star Wars universe expanded significantly, marking a lucrative era with blockbuster films and acclaimed streaming series like The Mandalorian and Andor, although not without some challenges and mixed reactions from fans.
While the box office success and establishment of Disney+ as a key platform underscored Kennedy’s achievements, she faced criticism for not fully capturing the cinematic magic of the original trilogy. In contrast, Filoni has made his mark primarily in television, contributing to popular series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian, as well as upcoming projects such as The Book of Boba Fett and Skeleton Crew.
Transitioning to a new chapter, both Filoni and Brennan will report to Alan Bergman, Disney Entertainment co-chairman, as they navigate the future of the Star Wars franchise. Filoni expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead Lucasfilm, acknowledging the trust placed in him by industry veterans like Kennedy, George Lucas, Bob Iger, and Alan Bergman. The announcement signals a significant shift for the iconic franchise, with fans eagerly anticipating new storytelling ventures under Filoni’s direction.
Kennedy, renowned for her successful producing career before joining Lucasfilm, delivered hits like E.T., Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Jurassic Park. Her standout moment at Lucasfilm came with the record-breaking success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, followed by more divisive responses to subsequent films like The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
Despite challenges and differing opinions within the fan base, Kennedy’s legacy at Lucasfilm includes projects like Rogue One that managed to resonate with audiences while exploring new narratives within the Star Wars universe. Looking ahead, upcoming ventures like Star Wars: Starfighter with Ryan Gosling are poised to continue Kennedy’s influence on the franchise for years to come, promising an exciting future for Star Wars enthusiasts worldwide.
