Despite his skepticism, the animal’s appearance was strikingly similar to that of a lion. However, upon further investigation, it was revealed that the creature was actually a brown Newfoundland dog that had been groomed to resemble a lion.
The intriguing saga began when timber harvesters working for O’Reilly’s forest management company in County Clare, Ireland, noticed a large animal roaming the woods. Despite limited sightings of the animal, a truck driver managed to capture it on camera last week, leading to the viral video footage showing the mysterious creature with a lion-like appearance.
Although lions are not native to Ireland’s forests, O’Reilly was compelled to report the sighting to the local police, who later identified the animal as a Newfoundland dog named Mouse with a unique haircut. The dog’s owners have remained anonymous, leaving O’Reilly curious about the decision to groom the dog in such a distinctive manner.
Siobhan McHaffie, from the Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, cautioned against shaving Newfoundland dogs’ coats, citing potential health risks. O’Reilly speculated that Mouse may have been groomed for Halloween festivities, considering the novelty of his lion-like appearance.
The incident serves as a reminder of similar cases where dogs have been mistaken for other animals, such as Charles the Monarch, a Labradoodle with a lion cut, and chow chows painted to resemble baby pandas at a zoo in China.
