“Michael” Biopic Preview Raises Questions

Lionsgate unveiled a preview for the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” on Monday, shedding light on some aspects of one of the most awaited films of 2026 while leaving many questions unanswered. First announced in 2022, the film directed by Antoine Fuqua and featuring Jaafar Jackson, the late superstar’s nephew, traces Michael Jackson’s journey from obscurity to global fame. Initially planned for an April 2025 debut, the premiere was delayed twice due to reshoots.

Reports suggest that the delays were linked to reshoots aimed at addressing legal concerns. Fuqua had reportedly planned to include a segment on the sexual abuse allegations against Jackson but had to alter the ending due to a legal agreement with Jordan Chandler, who accused Jackson of molestation in 1993, leading to a substantial settlement. The estate allegedly failed to disclose the restrictions on depicting Chandler or his family. However, this has not been confirmed by Fuqua, Lionsgate, or Jackson’s estate.

Speculation surrounds possible changes to the movie’s conclusion and whether it will cover the legal battles Jackson faced. The possibility of a sequel remains uncertain, with talks of splitting the film into two parts to explore different aspects of Jackson’s life and career. Lionsgate’s Adam Folgeson hinted at the potential for a second film after the initial release of “Michael.”

The involvement of Jackson’s family in the production is also unclear. Despite initial statements suggesting support from Michael’s children, Paris Jackson later refuted claims of her involvement in the film’s creation. The contentious relationship between estates and filmmakers in music biopics, aiming to portray artists in a favorable light, has been a recurring theme in the industry.

Like other music icons, Michael Jackson’s estate has sought to control his portrayal in the media, engaging in legal disputes over trademark issues and challenging documentaries that paint a negative picture. The ongoing struggle between estates and filmmakers underscores the challenges in accurately depicting artists’ lives.

Despite the controversies surrounding “Michael,” the film’s potential success lies in the enduring fame of its subject. Industry projections have already labeled “Michael” as a potential breakout of 2026, with expectations of crossing the billion-dollar mark at the box office. In a genre where the subject’s notoriety often drives success, Michael Jackson’s name alone may be the key to attracting audiences to the film.
