“Nepal Protests Rage On Despite PM’s Resignation”

Amid growing violent protests in Nepal over a short-lived ban on social media, demonstrators set fire to government buildings and politicians’ residences while attacking leaders. The prime minister’s resignation did little to quell the unrest as tens of thousands of protesters continued to occupy the streets, obstructing roads and raiding government facilities, with some ministers evacuated by army helicopters.

The protests, sparked by the blocking of various social media platforms and subsequent police violence resulting in 19 deaths and 100 injuries, persisted even after the ban was lifted. Fueled by anger over the fatalities and allegations of political corruption in the country located between China and India, the demonstrations intensified, leading to Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli stepping down and being appointed to head a caretaker government.

President Ramchandra Paudel urged protesters to engage in dialogue for a peaceful resolution, as jubilant youths stormed the parliament complex upon hearing Oli’s resignation. The youth, expressing discontent over the privileged lifestyles of political leaders’ children contrasted with widespread unemployment among their peers, drove the protests, labeled “demonstrations by Gen Z.”

Social media played a pivotal role in organizing and amplifying the protests, which expanded to other cities, denouncing corruption and demanding economic opportunities. Despite the ban on platforms like Facebook, X, and YouTube, the rallies persisted, with protesters targeting political leaders’ residences and government buildings, leading to a curfew and continued unrest despite official measures.

Critics condemned the government’s registration requirements for social networks as censorship attempts to stifle freedom of expression. The ban on certain platforms, including TikTok, was lifted after compliance assurances, with ongoing concerns about government overreach and restrictions on online speech.
