Nexstar, the owner of multiple ABC-affiliated local television stations, announced its decision to continue excluding “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” from its programming despite the show’s recent return to the airwaves and subsequent success on YouTube. In a statement released on Wednesday, Nexstar mentioned ongoing discussions with The Walt Disney Company, ABC’s parent company, regarding the show’s status.
Since last week, both Nexstar and Sinclair, representing around 25% of all affiliates, have opted to preempt Jimmy Kimmel’s program. This move came after Kimmel made remarks about the accused shooter of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during his monologue on September 15.
Following a suspension by ABC on September 17, Jimmy Kimmel Live! returned on Tuesday night after discussions between Kimmel and Disney. During the show, Kimmel expressed emotional regret, clarifying that he never intended to trivialize Kirk’s death or assign blame to any specific group. Despite not airing in 23% of U.S. TV households, the episode attracted 6.26 million broadcast viewers and broke viewership records on social platforms.
Former President Barack Obama criticized the government’s actions against media companies, emphasizing the importance of upholding free speech. Several celebrities and late-night hosts, including Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and Stephen Colbert, showed support for Kimmel. In a letter circulated by the American Civil Liberties Union, Hollywood stars condemned ABC’s suspension as a threat to freedom of speech.
Podcaster Joe Rogan defended Kimmel against conservative backlash, highlighting the dangers of government interference in comedy. Conversely, figures like Megyn Kelly disputed Kimmel’s comments, calling them false and demanding an apology. In response to the ongoing exclusion of Jimmy Kimmel Live! from certain stations, protests have emerged in various cities, with viewers also boycotting Disney’s services in solidarity with Kimmel.
