Northern Manitoba Health Region CEO Raj Sewda to Step Down; Successor Named

The northern Manitoba health region is in search of a new leader as the current CEO, Raj Sewda, is set to step down later this month. Sewda’s resignation was announced internally on January 2 and officially confirmed by the region’s board of directors on January 6. While the exact reason for his departure was not disclosed, Sewda expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the north and commended the collaborative efforts of his colleagues.

Cam Ritzer, previously the vice-president of health services, community, and continuing care, will assume the role of acting CEO following Sewda’s departure. Under Sewda’s tenure, the region successfully managed the response to last year’s northern wildfires, ensuring the safety of residents in long-term care facilities despite the evacuations of several NHR facilities. Thompson General Hospital, the largest facility in the region, faced challenges and was grey-listed by the Manitoba Nurses Union due to safety incidents.

Furthermore, long-standing issues such as the closure of obstetrics care at Flin Flon General Hospital and allegations of racism in treatment have persisted. The region has been working to address these concerns and improve healthcare services for the community. The NHR operates multiple health centers in northern Manitoba, collaborating with various provincial and federal healthcare facilities to provide comprehensive care to residents.
