OpenAI will introduce mature content options for adult users of ChatGPT who verify their age on the platform starting this December, as stated by CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday. Altman mentioned that as part of OpenAI’s commitment to treating adult users appropriately, they will expand content availability to include erotica for verified adults.
Altman explained that ChatGPT had initially been designed with strict limitations to address mental health concerns, which inadvertently impacted users without such issues. However, OpenAI has developed new tools to address mental health concerns effectively, allowing for the gradual relaxation of restrictions.
In the upcoming weeks, OpenAI plans to launch an updated version of ChatGPT that will enable users to customize the chatbot’s tone and personality according to their preferences. Altman emphasized that users could tailor ChatGPT to respond in a more human-like manner, incorporate emojis extensively, or even mimic a friendly demeanor, ensuring a personalized experience.
Earlier on the same day, Meta disclosed enhanced restrictions for Instagram users under 18, restricting content to a level equivalent to a PG-13 movie. These developments in content regulation follow OpenAI’s recent introduction of parental controls for ChatGPT, aimed at preventing inappropriate conversations around topics like suicide and self-harm with users under 18.
OpenAI also announced the ongoing development of an age-prediction system to estimate users’ age based on their interactions with ChatGPT. This system will help implement specific restrictions for users identified as potentially underage, contributing to a safer online environment for younger users.
