“Outrage Over Israeli Shooting of Surrendering Palestinians”

Human rights organizations have strongly criticized the shooting of two Palestinian individuals in the West Bank by Israeli security personnel. The incident, captured on video, depicted the men seemingly surrendering before being fatally shot, prompting calls for an impartial investigation by the United Nations human rights office.

The victims, Al-Muntasir Abdullah, 26, and Yousef Asasa, 37, were seen unarmed and in a surrendering posture during a raid in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as shown in footage by Palestine TV news. Following the shooting, the Israeli military and police initiated an inquiry after firing at suspects who had exited a building.

A relative of one of the deceased men, Mahmoud Asasa, described the act as brutal and unjust, emphasizing that surrendering individuals should be apprehended rather than killed in such a manner. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad group identified one of the victims as a commander and the other as a fighter.

Israeli authorities stated that the two individuals shot were wanted members associated with a terror network in the Jenin area. However, no specific allegations or evidence of their purported ties to terrorism were disclosed.

Jeremy Laurence of the United Nations highlighted the escalating incidents of Palestinian fatalities at the hands of Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank, underscoring the lack of accountability in these cases. He emphasized the need for adherence to due process and rule of law instead of resorting to lethal force.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir voiced support for the military and police involved in the shooting, asserting that terrorists deserve to die. The minister’s remarks were condemned by Laurence, who raised concerns about the impartiality of any future investigations conducted by entities closely tied to the government.

The chilling footage of the men surrendering before being shot has sparked outrage among human rights advocates, with Sarit Michaeli from the Israeli rights group B’Tselem stressing the need for international intervention. Michaeli pointed out that accountability extends beyond individual soldiers on the ground to policymakers and high-ranking military officials.

The shooting in Jenin follows a series of violent incidents in the West Bank, including the recent killing of two Palestinian teenagers in a separate raid near Ramallah. The region has witnessed heightened tensions since the Gaza ceasefire, with ongoing clashes and casualties reported on both sides.

The UN’s human rights office has documented a significant number of Palestinian casualties in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, urging a thorough investigation into the killings and accountability for those responsible. Laurence emphasized the imperative of ending impunity for unlawful use of force by Israeli security forces and escalating settler violence, calling for swift action and justice.
