“PM Carney Asserts Canada’s Trade Strength Amid Global Uncertainty”

Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted Canada as a dependable trading ally with sought-after resources during a speech in New York City to a global audience. Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations, Carney emphasized Canada’s capabilities in a time of global uncertainty, stating, “This is not just a shift, it’s a significant change driven by various factors. We are determined to confront this challenge.”

Carney outlined Canada’s strategy of strengthening its domestic foundation, expanding globally, and pursuing diverse partnerships to safeguard its values and interests, including collaborations with the European Union. He portrayed Canada as a reliable trading partner linked to major markets worldwide.

Following his address, Carney engaged in a discussion with Michael Froman, the Council on Foreign Relations’ president, covering topics such as trade, Canada’s Ukraine support, and the recent decision to recognize Palestine’s statehood. Carney emphasized Canada’s commitment to a two-state solution and its efforts to foster peace in the region.

The move to recognize Palestinian statehood aligns with Canada’s longstanding policy and its goal to facilitate a peaceful future for both Palestine and Israel. Carney criticized Hamas for impeding progress and expressed Canada’s full support for peace-building initiatives in the region.

In response to economic pressures stemming from U.S. policy decisions, Carney emphasized the need for Canada to assert its autonomy and develop new trade agreements while enhancing defense capabilities. He acknowledged the necessity of adapting to changing circumstances and fostering a strong national consensus on these issues.

Carney mentioned ongoing discussions with the U.S. and Mexico to augment the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement on trade. Later in the day, he engaged with global leaders at the United Nations, focusing on advancing international cooperation and trade relations.
