“PM Carney seeks trade opportunities in Malaysia amid uncertainty”

Prime Minister Mark Carney has landed in Malaysia with the goal of exploring trade opportunities within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). There is speculation about whether he will have a chance to interact with U.S. President Donald Trump, who is expected to attend the same event on Sunday.

Trump recently called off trade discussions with Canada following his displeasure over an Ontario government advertisement airing in the U.S. The ad featured pro-free trade statements by former President Ronald Reagan, which Trump criticized as “FAKE,” leading him to declare the termination of all trade negotiations with Canada.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the suspension of the ad in hopes of resuming negotiations on Monday. However, the Prime Minister’s Office remains uncertain about the resumption of talks with the U.S.

Before departing Ottawa for Kuala Lumpur, Carney responded calmly to Trump’s actions, highlighting progress in specific sectors like steel, aluminum, and energy. He expressed readiness to continue discussions when the U.S. is prepared, emphasizing the benefits for workers in both countries.

It is uncertain whether Carney will have the opportunity to convey this message to Trump in Malaysia. Trump has stated that he has no intentions of engaging with Carney and dismissed the ad depicting Reagan’s opposition to tariffs as “possibly AI.”

A senior federal official revealed that bilateral discussions with key ASEAN nations have been arranged, focusing on finalizing the Canada-ASEAN free trade agreement for signing next year. The official emphasized the importance of engaging with ASEAN’s rapidly growing economies to enhance access for Canadian exporters and strengthen partnerships.

Carney has emphasized his commitment to identifying opportunities for driving economic growth for Canadian businesses. While expectations for significant outcomes at ASEAN negotiations are modest, given the complexities involved with varying levels of economic development and regulatory frameworks among ASEAN members.
