Firefighters making progress in containing the Long Lake wildfire in Nova Scotia are now moving closer to the center of the blaze, as reported by the provincial Department of Natural Resources. The fire, spanning 8,468 hectares in Annapolis County, continues to burn uncontrollably, but containment barriers have been successfully established around its entire perimeter. This development has enabled firefighters to advance inward by as much as 100 meters in certain areas.
Rain is in the forecast for the region, with light precipitation anticipated in the afternoon and heavier showers expected later in the evening. A total of 158 firefighters, including personnel from the Department of Natural Resources, Ontario, Quebec, and the local area, are currently on the scene. Since the fire began over three weeks ago, it has destroyed 20 homes and several other structures, with no new reports of damage.
Residents of 360 evacuated homes were allowed to return on Wednesday, while 145 homes remain under evacuation orders. A further update on the wildfire situation is expected on Monday.
