Quebec Family Doctors End Boycott, Resume Teaching

Family doctors in Quebec have decided to resume teaching medical students after a week-long boycott due to contract negotiations. Quebec Premier François Legault had threatened to impose a special law if an agreement was not reached by Friday to address compensation issues and prevent doctors from leaving the province. The Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec (FMOQ) ended their boycott following a call from Quebec Liberal Party leader Pablo Rodriguez but criticized the government for its handling of the situation.

Rodriguez encouraged doctors to cease pressure tactics and resume negotiations for the benefit of all Quebecers. The FMOQ expressed disappointment that the government introduced a special law shortly after presenting its final offer, without waiting for the federation’s response. Despite their willingness to engage in intensive discussions, the FMOQ was disheartened by the government’s preemptive actions.

Premier Legault emphasized the need for progress in negotiations with family doctors and medical specialists to improve healthcare access for Quebec residents. Health Minister Christian Dubé acknowledged the doctors’ concerns but stressed the urgency of taking action. Opposition parties criticized the government’s use of legislation to handle the situation, with concerns raised about strained relationships with healthcare providers and the potential impact on patients.

The Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ), representing medical specialists, had already rejected the province’s fourth offer addressing performance-based pay concerns. In contrast, the FMOQ has yet to present the government’s latest offer to its members for consideration.
