Rapper Kodak Black, whose real name is Bill Kapri, was recently apprehended on a drug trafficking offense in central Florida, marking his latest encounter with law enforcement. The arrest took place at the Orange County jail on Wednesday, where Kapri faced a felony charge related to trafficking MDMA, a synthetic drug commonly known as ecstasy or molly.
Following the arrest, Kapri submitted a plea of not guilty and requested a jury trial. Additionally, he chose to forego appearing in person at a forthcoming arraignment hearing in state court. The chain of events leading to his arrest began in December when police responded to reports of gunfire in an Orlando neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered Kapri among a group of individuals gathered around high-end vehicles parked in the area.
During the investigation, an officer observed a suspicious white substance on a $100 bill within a Lamborghini SUV, which emitted a cannabis odor. Subsequent scrutiny of the vehicle unveiled a pink bag containing a plastic package of MDMA, along with $37,000 in cash and various documents bearing Kapri’s name. Notably, the pink bag matched one depicted in a photo posted by Kapri on his Instagram account, containing a distinctive lighter also visible in the image, as noted by investigators.
Despite everyone present at the scene disavowing ownership of the bag, including Kapri, he asserted that the money belonged to his business and requested its return. Representatives for Kapri at Universal Music Group, Ambrosia Healy, and Kevin Young, did not respond to requests for comments on the matter. Subsequently, Kapri was released on bail Thursday night, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Kapri’s legal history includes prior run-ins with the law. In a 2023 incident in Plantation, Fla., he was arrested for being found asleep at the wheel with white powder around his mouth, initially suspected to be cocaine but later identified as oxycodone following lab tests, for which Kapri possessed a valid prescription. This arrest violated his probation from a separate case, leading to a two-month incarceration in Miami.
Furthermore, in 2022, Kapri faced charges of trafficking oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, subsequently being released on bond with mandatory drug testing as a condition of his release. Court records indicate that he was mandated to undergo a 30-day drug rehabilitation program in 2023 after missing a drug test and testing positive for fentanyl shortly after.
In January 2021, former President Donald Trump commuted a three-year federal prison sentence that Kapri had received for falsifying documents used in the purchase of firearms. Noteworthy for his musical achievements, under the moniker Kodak Black, Kapri has achieved significant success with over 30 million singles sold, including hits like “Super Gremlin,” which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2022.
