Five games into the previous season, the Toronto Sceptres endured a four-game losing streak. In a bid to reverse their fortunes, team leaders Blayre Turnbull, Renata Fast, and Jocelyne Larcoque engaged in a private discussion with head coach Troy Ryan. The trio, particularly Fast, left the meeting determined to spearhead the team’s resurgence.
Fast, a standout defender, played a pivotal role in Toronto’s successful second-place regular season finish. She excelled in various aspects, tying for the lead in defender scoring, dominating in hits and time on ice, and contributing significantly to the team’s power play efficiency.
Her exceptional performance garnered her the PWHL Defender of the Year accolade and a nomination for the league’s MVP award. Fast’s dedication to improvement and remarkable skating ability have elevated her status as a key player for both the Toronto Sceptres and Team Canada, especially as the Olympic season approaches.
Despite her late start in hockey during high school and initial reluctance to play defense, Fast’s natural athleticism and relentless drive have propelled her to the pinnacle of the sport. Her transition to defense proved fortuitous, leading to national championship success at Clarkson University and subsequent achievements at the international level.
Renowned for her exemplary work ethic and team-first mentality, Fast continues to evolve her game by learning from mentors, teammates, and coaches. Her close partnership with coach Ryan has been instrumental in refining her offensive skills, transforming her into a formidable all-around player.
Looking ahead, Fast aims to build on her recent successes, including her MVP nomination, and help lead the Toronto Sceptres to their first Walter Cup victory. With the upcoming season presenting new challenges and opportunities, Fast remains focused on achieving further excellence on the ice and pursuing Olympic gold with her family’s unwavering support.
