U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, previously a staunch ally of Donald Trump who has now turned into a vocal critic of the president, announced her resignation from Congress effective in January. In a video lasting over 10 minutes that she shared online, Greene elaborated on her choice, stating that she has always faced disdain in Washington, D.C., and never truly belonged there.
The decision to resign came after a public fallout between Greene and Trump in recent times. The congresswoman openly criticized Trump over his position on materials linked to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as well as his foreign policy and healthcare approaches. Trump publicly labeled her a “traitor” and “wacky,” pledging to support an opponent against her in the upcoming re-election bid.
Having been closely associated with the Republican president since launching her political career in 2020, Greene emphasized her enduring loyalty to Trump, despite differing on certain issues. She expressed disappointment at being attacked by him for holding dissenting views, emphasizing that loyalty should be reciprocal and that representatives should be able to vote based on their conscience and constituents’ interests.
Greene rose to prominence as a key figure in Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement, quickly becoming a controversial figure in Congress due to her unconventional beliefs. Despite facing opposition from party leaders for her association with the QAnon conspiracy theory and white supremacist groups, she found support from Trump, who praised her as a “real WINNER!”
Trump hailed Greene’s resignation as “great news for the country” during an interview with ABC News. Her congressional ally, Representative Thomas Massie, commended her as embodying the essence of a true representative. Meanwhile, Barbara Comstock, a former Republican House member critical of Trump, praised Greene’s decision on social media, highlighting her refusal to endure mistreatment from Trump and threats, only to end up in the minority.
On a different note, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Greene’s shift from a Trump loyalist to a critic, pointing out that despite her rhetoric, Greene’s voting record still aligns with policies that undermine healthcare and promote corrupt practices.
