Resilient Crow Riven Defies Odds in BC Rescue

Dayna Slater, the founder of Good Caws Crow Rescue in Prince George, B.C., commends a resilient crow named Riven for refusing capture despite having half of her face torn off. Riven, whose beak was severely damaged in early March, drew attention for her perseverance in adapting to the injury.

Efforts to assist Riven were initially met with resistance as she evaded capture, leading the volunteers to monitor her from afar. Recent observations indicate that Riven has found ways to cope with her injury by using the remaining part of her beak as a scoop for feeding and adjusting her posture to aid in swallowing food.

Despite the impending fall of the damaged beak, Riven’s feather condition remains healthy, suggesting she has managed to maintain grooming, either by herself or with the help of her family. Slater expressed satisfaction with Riven’s progress and emphasized the importance of preening for feather maintenance and flight capability.

As the seasons change, the rescue team will continue to monitor Riven’s well-being to ensure she remains in good health. Slater marveled at Riven’s resilience, contrasting the bird’s ability to adapt and thrive with the challenges humans would face in similar circumstances.
