Rachael Berger, an optometrist from Saskatoon, has observed a rise in the number of drivers expressing concerns about their nighttime visibility.
Berger highlighted the growing challenge posed by LED headlights in modern vehicles, explaining how they can disrupt the natural night vision process by overwhelming the rods in our eyes, causing discomfort.
Advocates are urging government authorities and car manufacturers to reevaluate regulations and standards regarding bright headlights to ensure a balance between aiding drivers’ visibility and preserving safety for all road users.

Bright LED headlights, up to four times brighter than traditional lights, can trigger discomfort glare, leading to visual fatigue and temporary visual impairment, described as “glare monsters” according to Berger.
