“RSF Tightens Grip on El Fasher, Darfur Crisis Escalates”

Sudan’s paramilitary force is engaged in combat against remaining resistance in El Fasher, a city in Darfur enduring a prolonged siege. A complete takeover by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher could solidify a split between opposing military factions in Sudan. Concerns are mounting about potential reprisals against the approximately 250,000 residents still in El Fasher, the final stronghold of the Sudanese army in western Darfur.

Following the RSF’s claim of capturing the army’s headquarters in El Fasher on Sunday, reports indicate that the paramilitary group’s fighters are apprehending fleeing civilians in neighboring areas. The International Organization for Migration estimates that around 26,000 individuals have been displaced due to the conflict. Witnesses and sources from humanitarian and military organizations have observed thousands of soldiers, along with former rebel groups, encircled by RSF forces in western El Fasher.

UN emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher expressed deep concern over reports of civilian casualties and forced displacements in El Fasher. He emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in the region to allow humanitarian aid to reach the trapped and distressed civilian population. The RSF’s dominance in Darfur, where it has established a parallel government, raises fears of potential partitioning of the region, similar to the situation in Libya.

The ongoing conflict poses significant risks for Sudan, with potential consequences extending beyond Darfur. The RSF’s control of strategic locations like Bara in North Kordofan could bring them closer to Khartoum. The involvement of external actors and the proliferation of advanced weaponry, including drones, have complicated efforts to achieve a political resolution. The UN has urged for unfettered humanitarian access to provide assistance to vulnerable populations affected by the conflict.

As the situation escalates, the need for diplomatic efforts to facilitate peace talks becomes increasingly critical. Failure to make progress in negotiations could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and further destabilize the region. The protection of civilians, the prevention of revenge attacks, and the restoration of peace remain paramount objectives amid the escalating conflict in Sudan.
