The skies above Pokrovsk, a Ukrainian city under intense conflict, are teeming with drones, making it risky for military convoys to navigate the area openly. However, amidst dense fog, a video surfaced on social media capturing a group of Russian soldiers maneuvering through Pokrovsk on motorcycles and a car with missing doors.
The brief clip, shared by Russian military bloggers, provided a glimpse of the strategic battleground in Pokrovsk, resembling a scene from a dystopian movie like “Mad Max.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that adverse weather conditions were aiding Russia’s efforts to infiltrate the city after a prolonged push.
Front-line maps indicate that Pokrovsk is on the verge of falling, with some military experts predicting that Russia is likely to seize both Pokrovsk and the nearby city of Myrnohrad. Ukrainian drone operator, known as Goose, mentioned a noticeable increase in Russian presence in the area, operating in small teams and utilizing vehicles and motorcycles in recent days.
Goose, affiliated with the 68th Separate Jaeger Brigade of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, has been stationed in Pokrovsk witnessing Russia’s encroachment on the city, which used to house 60,000 residents before the invasion in 2022. Unlike the direct assault on Bakhmut earlier in the conflict, Russia has been employing a pincer movement to encircle Pokrovsk from the south and northeast.
With a growing number of Russian troops in the city, efforts are underway to establish offensive positions, aiming to restrict Ukraine’s supply lines and secure a foothold for further advancement northward in the Donetsk region. Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi estimates around 150,000 Russian troops are amassing in the area, with several hundred already present in Pokrovsk.
The urban area of Pokrovsk is described as a “grey zone” where neither side maintains full control, and the front line remains fluid, constantly shifting. Drones play a crucial role in monitoring movements on both sides. Col. Volodymyr Polevyi highlighted the impact of drone threats on logistics, leading to adjustments in troop movements and tactics on the ground.
Amid the conflict, the city of Pokrovsk lies in ruins, with only around 1,000 residents remaining despite evacuation warnings. The remaining civilians face challenges as they navigate through the war-torn city, with some choosing to stay despite the risks. Efforts are made to protect the lives of these citizens, but the situation remains perilous.
Overall, the situation in Pokrovsk remains volatile, with both sides engaged in strategic maneuvers and facing challenges in maintaining control over the embattled city.
