Sarah McLachlan Skips U.S. Performance Over Free Speech Concerns

Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan decided to forego her scheduled performances at the U.S. debut of the documentary “Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery” in Los Angeles on Sunday, citing concerns about stifling free speech. McLachlan, who co-founded the iconic Lilith Fair festival celebrating female musicians in the 1990s, made the announcement during the film’s screening at the Ford Theater. In a video captured by a journalist from The Hollywood Reporter, McLachlan expressed solidarity with the cause of free speech, prompting a standing ovation from the audience.

The surprise performances by McLachlan and singer-songwriter Jewel, who appears in the documentary, were canceled, with Olivia Rodrigo and Mya also expected to take the stage. McLachlan shared her struggle in addressing the current societal challenges, including the erosion of women’s rights, trans and queer rights, and the perceived constraints on free speech. The singer emphasized the importance of inspiring positive change and unity among communities through the power of music.

The decision to forgo the performances coincides with the recent suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, following controversial remarks related to a conservative commentator. The documentary is distributed in the U.S. by ABC News Studios, the same network airing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in the country. Despite the suspension, Disney announced the return of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after discussions with the host.

Public figures, including Canadian actor Tatiana Maslany, have voiced support for Kimmel, with Colbert denouncing the suspension as censorship. Over 400 celebrities signed a statement backing Kimmel and condemning what they perceive as a modern McCarthy era. McLachlan’s representatives declined further comments regarding her stance on the issue.

McLachlan encouraged viewers to watch the documentary, highlighting its potential to inspire positive change. “Lilith Fair” is currently available for streaming on CBC Gem in Canada and on Hulu and Disney+ in the U.S.
