Nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were revealed on Thursday morning, with the film “Sinners” making an impact in Oscars history. Garnering a remarkable total of 16 nominations, it surpassed the previous record holders “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.” The movie received recognition for various aspects including Ryan Coogler’s writing and direction, and Michael B. Jordan’s performance, marking his first Oscar nomination and a nomination for best picture.
Additionally, “One Battle After Another” and the Norwegian film “Sentimental Value” had a strong presence in the nominations. “Sentimental Value” secured nine nominations, a notable achievement for a non-English language film. Foreign language films like “The Secret Agent” from Brazil were also in the running for best picture, continuing the trend for the eighth consecutive year. Both “One Battle” and “Sentimental Value” were contenders for the Oscars’ new category, achievement in casting.
Actresses such as Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Amy Madigan, Wunmi Mosaku, and Teyana Taylor received nominations for best performance in a supporting role. The event culminated with the announcement of the best picture nominees, which included “Bugonia,” “F1,” “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “One Battle After Another,” “The Secret Agent,” “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners,” and “Train Dreams.”
While the nominations aligned with expectations from previous awards shows, there were some surprises. “Wicked: For Good” was notably absent from the list, and Delroy Lindo from “Sinners” replaced the expected nominee, Miles Caton, for supporting actor. Notable actors like Jesse Plemons and Paul Mescal missed out on best actor nods, while Apple’s “F1” emerged as a potential winner with four nominations, including one for best picture.
“One Battle After Another” narrowly missed setting a record with four acting nominations, Kate Hudson received a leading actress nomination for “Song Sung Blue,” and films like “Hamnet” and “Marty Supreme” also garnered significant recognition with multiple nominations.
The 98th Academy Awards, set to take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and hosted by Conan O’Brien, promise an exciting lineup of contenders across various categories.
