Stellantis Considers Selling Stake in Canadian EV Battery Plant

Stellantis, the global automotive giant, is considering selling its ownership stake in a major electric vehicle battery plant in Canada. Despite this move, the company remains committed to advancing electrification efforts.

The announcement of a significant 22 billion Euro charge by Stellantis due to scaling back its electric vehicle initiatives has caused ripples in the auto industry. CEO Antonio Filosa emphasized that this reset is part of a strategic process to prioritize customer preferences.

Stellantis also disclosed its intention to divest its 49 percent share in NextStar Energy, a partnership with LG Energy Solution to construct a $5 billion battery facility in Windsor, Ontario. However, the company will retain hundreds of engineers in Windsor to focus on electric vehicle and battery research.

This decision to maintain engineering staff in Canada’s automotive hub comes amidst uncertainties surrounding the industry’s future, partly due to trade tariffs and evolving electric vehicle trends. In 2022, Stellantis committed a substantial investment in Ontario for electric vehicle production, including funding for research and development.

The company’s expansion of its Automotive Research and Development Centre in Windsor, which includes a state-of-the-art Battery Pack Testing Facility, underscores Canada’s position as a leader in electric vehicle innovation.

Despite the recent strategic shift, Stellantis remains dedicated to offering various powertrain options, including gas-powered and electric versions of vehicles like the Windsor-built Dodge Charger. Furthermore, the company is actively recruiting for sales and marketing roles in Canada to support its growing operations.

Stellantis’ ongoing focus on battery research in Windsor, along with its plans for advanced technology centers in North America and Italy, demonstrates its continued commitment to electric vehicle development and innovation.
