“Support Grows for Ford’s Anti-Tariff Stance”

Following a dispute sparked by an Ontario government anti-tariff ad, support for Premier Doug Ford’s stance extends from local to national Canadian politicians, with no admission of error regarding the ad.

Brampton, Ont., Mayor Patrick Brown voiced his endorsement of the premier’s approach during an interview on Rosemary Barton Live on Sunday, emphasizing the need for impactful actions to garner attention and reaction in the public sphere.

Ontario’s advertisement, which employs quotes from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, delivered a strong anti-tariff message that resonated with American audiences, provoking a sharp response from U.S. President Donald Trump who halted trade negotiations with Canada and threatened a tariff increase.

Trump has labeled the ad as deceptive and accused Canada of meddling in a U.S. Supreme Court case concerning tariffs imposed for national security reasons.

Despite the controversy, B.C. Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar praised Ontario’s ad for its effectiveness in raising awareness and emphasized British Columbia’s plan to launch its own anti-tariff campaign in the coming month, albeit on a more restrained scale.

Meanwhile, Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz commended Ford’s communication of Canadian sentiments regarding tariffs, acknowledging the decision to withdraw the ad and move forward positively.

At the federal level, Liberal House leader Steven MacKinnon lauded Ford’s advocacy for Canada, refraining from criticism and emphasizing unity in the face of the trade dispute.

As Canada seeks to resolve the trade impasse and address Trump’s tariff threats, former deputy chief of staff Brian Clow suggested leveraging the ad’s removal as a diplomatic opportunity to engage with the U.S. administration.

Trump’s assertion that the ad was fraudulent has fueled tensions, with speculation that the ad’s impact prompted Trump’s aggressive response to disrupt potential trade agreements.

As Canada explores diversifying its trade partnerships beyond the U.S., the efforts of officials like Carney and McKenna to strengthen international ties are seen as crucial in navigating the current trade landscape.
