An adolescent has been taken into custody regarding the tragic incident where an eight-year-old boy was hit by a random bullet while resting in his North York residence last month.
JahVai Roy was with his mother in their apartment near Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive when the incident occurred just after midnight on Aug. 16.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced deceased.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw disclosed that the adolescent, who was 15 at the time of the shooting and is now 16, has been apprehended and charged with first-degree murder alongside five firearm-related offenses.
The arrest took place on Friday, as per police reports.
At the time of the arrest, law enforcement claims the adolescent was carrying a modified loaded firearm capable of automatic firing.
According to Demkiw, two other young suspects are still at large. Toronto police had received authorization to reveal the identities of the two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, as they are sought for first-degree murder. However, this permission expired on Friday afternoon.
The 18-year-old suspect was 17 when the shooting transpired, as stated by the police.
Demkiw is urging the teenage suspects to surrender themselves to the authorities and is requesting individuals with any information to reach out to the police or Crime Stoppers.
“If you are aware of their whereabouts and are found sheltering or assisting them in any way, we will pursue investigations and press charges accordingly,” he emphasized.
