Armed individuals in Mali have tragically ended the life of a TikTok influencer who had been supporting the country’s military efforts, authorities reported on Monday. Mariame Cissé was forcibly taken from a weekly market in Echel and later executed in front of a crowd at Independence Square in Tonka, as confirmed by local officials.
The incident took place in Tonka, a village located around 150 kilometers from Timbuktu along the Niger River, an area known for the presence of the al-Qaeda affiliate Jama’at Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM). Although no specific group has claimed responsibility for the killing, Cissé, who was not affiliated with the military, had shared images of herself in military attire with her sizable following on TikTok, potentially attracting the attention of the perpetrators.
According to reports, Cissé had received death threats in the days leading up to her abduction. While two local sources confirmed the incident to Reuters, they chose to remain anonymous due to safety concerns. One source mentioned that Cissé was forcefully taken from the market, with details of the execution relayed from witnesses in the crowd and from the victim’s family.
Described as someone who sought to highlight her community’s positive aspects through her social media presence, Cissé’s videos often showcased her support for the Malian army. Mali has been grappling with armed conflicts since 2012, with military interventions aimed at addressing the escalating insecurity. However, a series of coups have further destabilized the situation, leading to increased insecurity, particularly in rural areas where armed groups like JNIM hold significant influence, including imposing a fuel blockade on the nation.
