Firefighters successfully rescued a worker trapped under debris inside a historic tower undergoing renovations in Rome. Tragically, the rescued worker, identified as Octav Stroici, did not survive the ordeal. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed deep condolences for the loss and extended sympathies to Stroici’s family and colleagues.
The rescue operation, lasting 11 hours, was a challenging task due to the collapsing structure. Despite initial difficulties, rescuers managed to extract another Romanian worker safely. Firefighters utilized a crane and specialized equipment to clear the rubble and reach the trapped individuals.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri commended the cautious efforts of the rescue team during the delicate extraction process. The incident drew a crowd of tourists who witnessed the dramatic rescue attempts, including the unfortunate secondary collapse of parts of the tower.
The Torre dei Conti, a historic tower built in the 13th century, has been closed for renovations since 2007. The ongoing restoration project, costing $11.1 million, aims to preserve the tower’s heritage and create new museum installations dedicated to Rome’s Imperial Forum history.
Before the recent renovation phase, thorough safety assessments and tests were conducted to ensure the structural stability of the tower. However, Italian prosecutors have initiated investigations into possible charges of negligence related to the collapse incident.
Despite the tragic outcome of the rescue operation, efforts to ensure the safety and preservation of the Torre dei Conti continue as authorities work to determine the cause of the collapse.
