“Ukraine Expands Ground Drone Use in Conflict with Russia”

Ukraine has been deploying ground drones as part of its ongoing conflict with Russia, which is nearing its third year. Drones of various types have played a crucial role for Ukraine in the war, allowing them to engage the enemy not only on the front lines but also in other areas. Russia, in response, has also utilized its own fleet of drones within Ukrainian territory.

In response to the evolving situation, Ukraine is now looking to leverage ground drones, also known as unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), to assist its military in performing essential tasks and ensuring the safety of its soldiers. Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov has expressed plans to expand the use of UGVs for tasks such as supplying troops, transporting the wounded, and other operations. This initiative aligns with Mykhailo Fedorov’s projection that Ukraine will require tens of thousands of these tools this year.

Samuel Bendett, an advisor at the Russia Studies program at CNA, highlighted the Ukrainian preference for UGVs over soldiers due to their effectiveness. However, Russia is also exploring the advantages of UGVs, introducing various new tools into their forces.

UGVs deployed in Ukraine are following a similar trajectory to widely used aerial drones, focusing on cost-effective and easily replaceable models. This approach allows for rapid testing and deployment of UGVs, with Bendett emphasizing the strategic importance of these tools in conflict zones.

The historical significance of UGVs dates back to devices like the German Goliaths from World War II, which were remote-controlled mines. The current proliferation of UGVs in Ukraine reflects their increasing utility, with a wide range of missions being undertaken by these unmanned systems.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the adoption of ground drones aims to reduce the risk for Ukrainian soldiers engaged in combat. The emphasis is on leveraging innovative technologies to handle dangerous tasks and protect the lives of military personnel. The success and versatility of these machines ultimately depend on the creativity and adaptability of soldiers deploying them.
