Alanna Mah netted the lone goal as Canada suffered a 7-1 defeat against the United States, settling for silver at the first-ever Para ice hockey women’s world championships held on Sunday. Kelsey DiClaudio, crowned tournament MVP, notched four goals for the U.S., which only allowed one goal in the entire six-team competition. Catherine Faherty, Jamie Benassi, and Kaden Herchenroether added to the American tally.
Despite Canada holding a narrow 1-0 lead going into the second period, the game’s momentum shifted when Faherty and Benassi scored within a minute of each other early in the frame, extending the lead to 5-0. Mah managed to score for Canada, making it a 5-1 game with 10:47 left in the match.
Both teams entered Sunday’s final undefeated, having convincingly won their semifinal matches to compete for the gold medal. Canada triumphed over Norway 7-0, while the U.S. dominated Great Britain with a 10-0 victory on Saturday.
