Victoria Mboko emerged victorious in a thrilling all-Canadian faceoff during the semifinals of the Hong Kong Tennis Open. The 19-year-old tennis sensation overcame Leylah Fernandez in a nail-biting match with a final score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, securing her spot in the WTA final for the second time this season.
Following a challenging start, Mboko showcased an impressive improvement in her first-serve success rate, dominating the latter part of the game by claiming victory in 11 out of the last 14 games against her 23-year-old opponent from Laval, Quebec.
Reflecting on the match, Mboko acknowledged Fernandez’s outstanding performance, describing her opponent’s aggressive and top-notch tennis skills that initially disrupted her rhythm. However, Mboko’s determination and strategic mindset enabled her to regain confidence in her game, leading to a more assertive approach towards the end of the match.
In the upcoming final, the Toronto native is set to go head-to-head against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa, who secured a convincing win over Maya Joint in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) in the semifinals. Mboko previously faced Bucsa in the first qualifying round on the clay courts in Rome earlier this year, where she emerged victorious with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2.
This anticipated final promises an exciting clash between two talented players, as Mboko aims to replicate her earlier success against Bucsa and clinch the prestigious title at the Hong Kong Tennis Open.
