The Town of Conception Bay South is facing a water crisis as a result of a water main break, leading to the declaration of a local state of emergency. Mayor Darrin Bent has warned that the town’s water supply is expected to be depleted within the next two to three hours. The emergency measures include the closure of businesses and a mandatory water conservation order for residents to use water only for essential needs.
This marks the second time in less than a month that Conception Bay South has been under a state of emergency. The water main break was detected between Three Arm Pond and Three Island Pond, affecting the water supply to around 30,000 residents in the area. The town is currently assessing alternative water access options for residents as they work to resolve the issue.
Business owners, like Leonard Hickey of Hickey’s Greenhouses, are facing challenges due to the water shortage, especially concerning the impact on their operations. Officials from the City of St. John’s, responsible for the Regional Water Authority, have stated that the repair timeline remains uncertain.
Mayor Bent emphasized the importance of water conservation efforts to prolong the water supply, although the ultimate water restoration timeline remains unclear. Updates will be provided to residents, including any impact on the upcoming school day. Additionally, emergency water reserves have been set aside by the fire department, and neighboring fire crews are on standby in case of emergencies.
The situation is evolving, and residents are advised to stay updated as the town navigates through this water crisis.
