A Winnipeg high school football player who sustained a severe neck injury in a game two weeks ago has passed away. Stephanie Ciaralli shared on Facebook that Darius Hartshorne, known as Dee, has ended his struggle. Ciaralli, who was raising Hartshorne, expressed deep sorrow for his ordeal over the past 12 days but also pride in the young man he had become.
Hartshorne, a Grade 12 student from Sisler Spartans, was hurt during a game against Tec Voc Hornets when he was tackled while returning the opening kickoff on October 17. Matt Henderson, superintendent of Winnipeg School Division, extended support to the affected schools and emphasized the importance of helping students, staff, and the family through this difficult time.
The Spartans’ head coach, Sean Esselmont, described Hartshorne as a well-liked and valued team member, highlighting his genuine and wonderful personality. The team has been honoring Hartshorne by wearing decals featuring his jersey number and prominently displaying his jersey at games.
In a recent update, Ciaralli mentioned that Hartshorne had been taken out of an induced coma but was not waking up on his own. Despite initially positive signs after the operation, the situation had taken a turn.
Political figures like Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leader Obby Khan and Premier Wab Kinew offered condolences to Hartshorne’s loved ones. Coun. Vivian Santos also paid tribute to Hartshorne during a city council meeting, emphasizing his kindness and compassion towards others.
Hartshorne, who turned 17 while in the hospital, was remembered for his warmth and caring nature. The community mourns the loss of this young football player who touched many lives with his spirit.
