“Yoga Instructor Completes Epic Vancouver Island Paddleboard Expedition”

Paul Verchere, a yoga instructor and former nightclub owner, embarked on a remarkable journey around Vancouver Island while recuperating from ankle surgery. Inspired by Terry Fox’s epic run across Canada, he meticulously planned the month-long stand-up paddleboarding expedition for two years.

Setting off from Ladysmith, B.C., on June 25, Verchere paddled approximately 1,300 kilometers around the island over 40 days. Carrying 40 kilograms of gear, including food and water, he faced physical challenges like setting up camp and cooking meals after long days on the water.

Despite encountering rough waters, strong headwinds, and curious wildlife such as breaching humpback whales, Verchere persevered. He navigated around Port Hardy and Tofino for supplies, paddling for about 36 days with a few breaks for rest and to avoid adverse weather conditions.

The journey had its share of intense moments, especially when battling headwinds and waves around Cape Scott. Nevertheless, as Verchere completed his expedition and returned to Ladysmith on August 4, he felt a profound sense of accomplishment.

Reflecting on his adventure, Verchere expressed a desire to tackle the Northwest Passage in the future. Despite the physical toll of the journey, he embraced post-trip activities like yoga, hiking, and paddling, savoring the warm summer weather in British Columbia.
