YouTube TV Drops Disney-Owned Channels Amid Dispute

YouTube TV subscribers are no longer able to access Disney-owned channels such as ABC and ESPN due to a failed agreement between the two parties. This absence also includes other popular channels like the Disney Channel, FX, and Nat Geo on Google’s streaming platform. The dispute escalated as Disney followed through on its threat to suspend content during negotiations, impacting coverage of upcoming college football games, as well as NBA, NFL, and NHL matches.

As the largest internet TV provider in the U.S. with over nine million subscribers, YouTube TV has faced backlash from viewers who have noticed warnings on their screens about the channel blackout. YouTube accused Disney of using the blackout threat as a negotiation tactic to raise prices for subscribers, noting that Disney’s actions benefit its own streaming services like Hulu + Live TV and Fubo.

Expressing disappointment over the situation, YouTube urged Disney to collaborate for a fair agreement to restore the networks to YouTube TV. To compensate subscribers for the ongoing absence of Disney content, YouTube announced a $20 credit if the blackout persists for an extended period. The base subscription for YouTube TV is priced at $82.99 per month.

In response, Disney argued that YouTube TV is unwilling to pay fair rates for its channels, accusing Google of leveraging its market dominance to stifle competition and disrupt standard industry negotiations. Despite the impasse, Disney emphasized its commitment to reaching a resolution promptly for the benefit of both parties and viewers.
