A film featuring a polar bear, co-produced by Yukon resident Mike Code, has won a prestigious award at the Sundance Film Festival. The documentary called “Nuisance Bear” secured the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Documentary competition, as revealed by the festival on Friday morning. Code expressed surprise at the win, stating, “We had no idea this was going to happen. It was like, ‘What?!’ … We were quite captivated by the award.”
The film follows a fictionalized journey of a lone polar bear facing challenges in the Arctic, particularly focusing on human-bear interactions, Code shared in an interview with CBC’s Midday Cafe. It examines the significance of the bear to two distinct communities: Churchill, Manitoba, and Arviat, Nunavut. Code, who grew up in both Churchill and Arviat and had encounters with numerous polar bears, emphasized that the film does not aim to compare the communities but rather explores the nuances in how they handle the common issue of bears entering their towns.
Code’s father, who was a teacher in Arviat and a wildlife cinematographer in Churchill, influenced his passion for wildlife. The collaboration with the future directors of “Nuisance Bear,” Jack Wiseman and Gabriela Osio Vanden, began at the Hot Docs film festival in 2019. Filming for the documentary commenced in Churchill in 2023, utilizing car-mounted cameras with advanced stabilization technology to capture close-up shots of bears safely from within the vehicle.
The filmmakers realized the uniqueness of their project as they captured unseen footage on film, which left a lasting impact on audiences at the festival. Attending Sundance signifies a filmmaker’s achievement in producing high-quality content and offers networking opportunities with industry peers to showcase their work. Code emphasized the significance of winning such competitions, likening it to the prestige of an Oscar nomination.
Overall, the success of “Nuisance Bear” at the Sundance Film Festival reflects the dedication and talent of the filmmakers, highlighting their innovative approach to storytelling and capturing wildlife on screen.
