“Massive Industrial Tires Filled with Styrofoam Wash Up in BC”

Eleven large industrial tires, each weighing approximately four tonnes and filled with Styrofoam, have been found washed up near Campbell River, British Columbia. The Greenways Land Trust, a non-profit organization based in the area, is facing challenges in removing the tires due to financial and technical constraints.

Keely Dodds, the stewardship coordinator of the organization, mentioned that their activities rely heavily on grant funding and are not primarily focused on beach cleanups. The origin of the tires is unknown, but it is suspected that they may have broken away from a large dock or barge during recent windstorms in the region. The Styrofoam inside the tires, originally used to keep them afloat, is now at risk of breaking into smaller pieces that could potentially be ingested by marine life, posing a threat to their well-being.

Concerns also arise regarding the possible leaching of chemicals from the tires into the water, posing a threat to salmon in the area. Peter Ross, a senior scientist at Raincoast Conservation Foundation, highlighted the release of the chemical 6PPD-quinone from tires, which has been linked to significant harm to coho salmon populations in streams during rainy weather.

Efforts to remove the tires from the beach have been challenging, with previous cleanups requiring significant time and financial resources. The difficult access to the beach where the tires are located further complicates the removal process. While the organization is considering options such as using helicopters for removal, financial constraints pose a significant obstacle.

Local authorities have acknowledged the situation, with efforts underway to address the debris in the marine environment. The Ministry of Environment emphasized the importance of community-led initiatives in marine debris cleanup and ensuring accountability for those responsible for environmental damage.

Ross emphasized the need for accountability in addressing the issue, urging action to identify and hold responsible parties accountable for the cleanup of the industrial tires.
