Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev was hospitalized following an on-ice incident during Saturday night’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Coach Craig Berube confirmed that Tanev had movement in all his limbs after colliding with Philadelphia’s Matvei Michkov in the third period of the 5-2 victory. Although the impact was shoulder-to-shoulder, Tanev’s head jerked back, causing him to remain prone on the ice.
Medical staff promptly attended to Tanev, immobilizing his head and neck before transferring him on a stretcher off the rink. This unfortunate event occurred during Tanev’s comeback game after recovering from a concussion that had sidelined him for four matches. Michkov received a minor penalty for interference as a result of the collision.
Coach Berube later informed reporters that Tanev had been taken to a hospital in Philadelphia for further evaluation but assured that he had movement in all his extremities. There was a possibility that Tanev might return to Toronto with the team contingent on medical updates.
Despite the distressing incident, Tanev managed to contribute an assist on Jake McCabe’s goal in the second period. Teammate Auston Matthews expressed concern, emphasizing Tanev’s importance to the squad and conveying solidarity with thoughts and prayers for his swift recovery.
