Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has labeled an explosion on a railway line crucial for deliveries to Ukraine as an unprecedented act of sabotage. Authorities are looking into potential links to Russia, Belarus, or their allies concerning the blast that occurred on the track connecting Warsaw to southeastern Poland. Tusk has expressed determination to apprehend the culprits responsible, emphasizing the significance of the line for transporting aid and weaponry to Ukraine. Polish officials confirmed that an explosive device caused damage to a section of the track and overhead cables along the same route, both believed to be acts of sabotage.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has affirmed close coordination with Polish authorities pending the investigation outcome. Western officials have accused Russia and its allies of orchestrating numerous attacks in Europe since the Ukrainian invasion to undermine support for Ukraine and sow fear. In a recent incident, Poland, with NATO support, intercepted Russian drones that breached Ukrainian airspace.
Poland’s Security Services Minister, Tomasz Siemoniak, indicated a high likelihood that the railway incidents were orchestrated by foreign entities. Following a report of track issues by a train driver on Sunday morning, subsequent inspection revealed damage near Mika village southeast of Warsaw. Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński confirmed the detonation of an explosive device on the tracks, with uncertainty regarding the exact timing of the incident. Despite the damage, no injuries were reported among passengers and crew aboard the affected train.
Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz disclosed plans for the army to survey the entire Warsaw-Lublin-Hrubieszów line, which connects Poland’s capital to Ukraine. Another train traveling the same route was halted due to damaged power lines near Puławy, with no injuries reported among the passengers. During a press conference in Brussels, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb emphasized the importance of maintaining composure in response to alleged Russian disruptions, cautioning against overreactions. Stubb highlighted the evolving tactics of Russia, blending kinetic warfare in Ukraine with hybrid strategies in Europe.
As tensions persist, Russia has consistently denied involvement in past sabotage allegations, including incidents related to drones near airports and underwater cable disruptions.
