PEI Municipalities Reschedule Halloween Due to Severe Weather

Some children in Prince Edward Island will experience a delayed Halloween celebration as severe weather conditions are expected on Friday, prompting municipalities like Charlottetown, Cornwall, and Stratford to reschedule trick-or-treating to Saturday.

Prioritizing the safety of young trick-or-treaters, the municipalities made the decision to move the festivities due to the anticipated heavy rain and strong winds. Summerside also followed suit, rescheduling their Halloween activities to Saturday while maintaining an 8 p.m. curfew.

Corey Frizzell, the town councillor of Cornwall, emphasized caution in light of the significant rainfall and wind forecast. Residents like Danielle Jesso supported the decision, highlighting the importance of ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for children.

Warren Grove, another municipality, echoed this sentiment, focusing on the well-being of the kids amidst the weather concerns. The Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nations opted to hold their trick-or-treating activities on Thursday to avoid the impending bad weather.

Environment Canada warned of heavy rainfall and strong winds starting Friday morning, with gusts up to 70 kilometers per hour and potential rainfall of 30 to 40 millimeters. CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland anticipated the heaviest rain in the afternoon but suggested a less severe outlook for Saturday.

Hurricane Melissa’s impact influenced the weather conditions, with Environment Canada advising Islanders to prepare for the storm by clearing drains and securing outdoor items. Some smaller communities in P.E.I. maintained their Friday plans for trick-or-treating, while others followed the rescheduling trend.

To ensure accurate information about local Halloween celebrations, residents are encouraged to verify the arrangements with their respective municipal councils.
