A recent public inquiry report criticized former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, describing it as “toxic,” “chaotic,” and indecisive. The report highlighted a delay in implementing lockdown measures, which resulted in approximately 23,000 additional deaths in the UK.
The UK experienced over 230,000 COVID-related deaths, comparable to rates in the US and Italy but higher than other Western European countries. The economic repercussions of the pandemic are still being felt by the nation.
The inquiry, initiated by Johnson in May 2021, strongly condemned his government’s response to the crisis. It pointed out his lack of decisive leadership, violations of government guidelines by his office staff, and criticism of his top advisor, Dominic Cummings.
Former judge Heather Hallett, who chaired the inquiry, characterized the government’s culture during the pandemic as “toxic and chaotic.” The report highlighted Johnson’s initial underestimation of the virus’s severity and his distraction by other governmental matters, particularly Brexit negotiations.
The report stated that Johnson should have recognized the urgency of the situation earlier and provided stronger leadership. It noted that if the UK had implemented a lockdown a week earlier than March 23, as recommended by evidence, it could have potentially prevented around 23,000 deaths in the first wave.
Hallett acknowledged the difficult decisions faced by Johnson but criticized his frequent changes in decision-making and failure to act promptly even when better informed about the virus. The report also highlighted that delayed actions contributed to subsequent national lockdowns in the UK.
