“Spotify Introduces ‘Verified by Spotify’ Badge”

Spotify Introduces “Verified by Spotify” Badge to Distinguish Authentic Artists from AI-Generated Music

Spotify users will notice a new feature when browsing through the “New Music Friday” section on the app. The music streaming platform has unveiled a “Verified by Spotify” badge to help listeners identify genuine artists from AI-generated music accounts.

In response to the proliferation of AI-generated music on its platform, Spotify aims to highlight artists who are not artificial intelligence. The green badge, accompanied by a check mark, signifies that the artist is real and trusted, unlike AI-generated or AI-persona accounts.

To receive the verification badge, artists must meet specific criteria set by Spotify, including maintaining consistent listener engagement over time and having a recognizable presence both on and off the platform. This may include active social media accounts, scheduled live performances, and merchandise sales.

According to Spotify, artists need at least 10,000 active listeners over three consecutive months to qualify for verification. The company also considers artists who have made significant contributions to music culture or are gaining cultural momentum and relevance.

Some well-known artists already sporting the green badge include Madonna, BTS, and Bad Bunny. Canadian talents like The Beaches, Cameron Whitcomb, and Jeremy Dutcher have also received verification. However, artists such as Joni Mitchell, Roy Orbison, and Celia Cruz are yet to be verified.

While Spotify has no plans to monetize the verification process, concerns have been raised about potential obstacles for new and independent artists trying to expand their reach. The criteria, including the 10,000 active monthly listener threshold, could pose challenges for smaller artists aiming to gain visibility on the platform.

Spotify’s verification system continues to evolve, with ongoing reviews and updates planned. Unlike some other platforms, Spotify currently does not allow AI-generated work to be eligible for verification. Meanwhile, Apple Music and Deezer have implemented transparency measures to identify AI-generated content for their users.

As the music industry navigates the growing influence of AI, artists like Taylor Swift are taking steps to protect their music and image rights from misuse through artificial intelligence. It remains to be seen how Spotify’s verification process will impact the diverse landscape of artists and music on the platform.
